888 not on the Start line of the Mini en Mai

After the last race the Pornichet Select where I had a lot of trouble on the last upwind part of the race with boatspeed and height, I found my answer during a righting moment test we did the following week. The test included pulling the boat on it’s side to be able to mesure the load pulling upwards on the mast top when the boat layed flat at 90 degrees to be able to optimise our keelangle and keelwheight. With the boat on ti’s side i could see that the cover over the keelshaft was riped open and hanging loose on one side. This cover has no structural function it is only there to cover up the rectangular part of the keelshaft when the keel is extended and canted.

I am not to sure if I am happy that i found the reason why I wasn’t fast at the end of the pornichet select or if I should be annoyed by the broken piece. It confirms for me that if I can get the last flaws out of the system the boat can play in the top end of the fleet.


The Problem is that the carbon keelshaft has some flex that puts a lot of pressure on the cover and it fails over time. We fight with that problem since the launch of the boat, we tested 3 different solutions already: stiff carbon, fibreglass, soft epoxy… Now we need to find a solution which solves the problem once and for all.

Because this takes time I decided not to take part in the Mini en Mai, I regret not doing this race but it is important to solve that issue now to be confident on the Minitransat.



Pornichet Select – good points and bad points plus some adventures :-P

The Pornichet Select is the first solo mini race of the season here on the atlantic coast. The weather forecast predicted eastertly and north-easterly. predicting not very stable and cold but with quite a bit of reaching.

We had 70 boats on the start line, fairly crowded, and passing the offset mark was a stressful moment in 15kn of very shifty breeze with all those boats around not manoevering very quick in single handed mode.

My first adventure started when I borke one of my winchhandles and lost the other one overboard an houre later 😦 Not a good situation on a prototype where the keel is canted by a purchase system wich is poyered by a winch, and adjustable rig yhich has to be put under tension again when adjusted. I figuerd out that i could put sheets from one cockpit winch to the other and stand on the sheet in the middle to tension it, so manoevres just got a bit longer with Simon jumping around on a sheet in the cockpit after every sail adjustement.

Only 24h later i remembered that i took a paire of vicegrips with me, my new winchhandle problem was solved, felt a bit stupid for not having come up with that idea 24h earlier 😛

Half way through the race after a good catch up on a reaching leg up to the 4th position I got myself tangled up in a lopster pot in the middle of the night, the line has cought just qbove the keelbulb, i couldn’t get rid of it by sailing backwards so I had to find a way to the line and I was not very keen on simming in the middle of the night on my own. I did not have anything long enough on board to get down to the line, so I Extended a mainsailbatten with my boathook and some tape. Finalement I was able to get to the line and cut myself free. Only by daylight I could see that there was still a bit of that lobster buoy hanging off my keel, that explainded my lack of speed after the incident.

With a big lack of sleep and light upwind conditions the end of the race was complicated as I havent figured out my speedproblem in those sort of conditions yet and on top of that I was not that fresh anymore in my head. sometimes halucinating a bit and cerainly not alone in my head all the time. I lost auite a lot of places by going slow and being on the wrong side of a left shiftm I ended up in 12th position.

Resume: some good points in there for shure an improvement from last race but still some work to do!


What is next:

Traing and testing in Lorient and deciding on the adjustement to improve upwind performance, as well as a stability test to be able to optimize the keel weight

Next Stop – Pornichet Select

Optimisation went on after the Lorient BSM. I learnt a lot about my boat and how I need to handle the new tools on board. After some days of training I will be testing my progress at the Pornichet Select 6.50. 300 miles single handed with start and finish in front of Saint-Nazaire.

Not an easy start of the season

A very light Weatherforecast and a coursechange were predicting a slow race from the beginning. The easterly breeze was shifty and not very consistant. We had a good start, but already on the first beat so the topmark our speed deficit became apparent. We were not able to hold our position in the fleet and dropped back quite a bit, better downwind performance and a good tactical coice brought us back in the game on the short kiterun down to penmen (Ile de groix). The long upwind beat to wards quiberon was not aneasy task as we couldn’t resolve our speed issues and were quite happy with a big parkup wich brought us back in contact with the front runners again. But the winds stayed very light and shifty that together with our speed issues upwind made our life very hard for the rest of the race. We ended up at the back of the field, not a good start of the season.

After this race it is clear that some of the changes we did this winter need to be optimised some more.

Start of the Lorient BSM tomorrow!

This first race of the season will be the chance to figure out the settings for Eight Cube in the new daggerboard setup. The conditions are looking light and not very predictable, not eight cubes favourite weather.

The race will start at 11 o’clock and it should take us about 24h to get around the racecourse.

Season 2017 is about to start, 888 almost ready!


As some of you already know, I could not resist the tempation to sign up for an other Minitransat last December 🙂 There was that feeling that I haven’t got all there is out of Eight Cube yet, so I put her in a boatyard (to be exact meragitee so not just any boatyard). The primary aim was to improve the allround abilities of the boat and make the boat more reliable. I got rid of my L-Foils and replaced them by good proven daggerboards to gain weight and improve lightwind abilities of the boat. The ruddersystem wich made some problems on the last transat has been partly redesigned to improve the reliability. Along the way I have repainted the deck as the nonskid solution we chose at the beginning didn’t age well at all, so the deck has gone a bit brighter aswell that I can keep walking around barefeet even when the sun is burning down on it.

A rulechange would allow to fit foils to the boat which are wider than the 3m width of the hull so we started looking at DSS solutions (Dynamic Stability System) but for now the budget is to thight to do these sort of modifications even though the gain in righting moment looks very promising.

If everything goes well 888 will be back in the water next week and we will start training immediately!

The first race of the Season will be the Lorient Bretagne Sud beginning of April 150nm doublehanded together with Axel Trehin who sailed the last Minitransat on 716.



Wie einige von euch schon wissen konnte ich letzten Dezember nicht wiederstehen mich nocheinmal für das Minitransat anzumelden mit meiner Eight Cube 🙂 Da war dieses gefühl dass ich noch nicht alles aus der 888 rausgeholt habe, also gieng es in die Werft (nicht irgend eine sondern Meragitee in Port la Foret). Das Ziel war das Boot allround fähiger zu machen und die Zuverlässigkeit zu erhöhen. Ich habe meine L-Foils durch gute getestete Schwerter ersetzt um die Leichtwindfähigkeiten zu verbessern. Dazu kam auch noch ein neuer Decksanstrich nach dem der alte Antirutsch gar nicht gut gealtert hat, ich habe provitiert das Deck etwas heller zu machen dass ich auch bei brennender Sonne im Passat noch Barfuss unterwegs sein kann 😛 

Eine Regeländerung erlaubt Rumpfanhänge die über die Rumpfbreite von 3m herausragen, wir haben begonnen eine DSS Lösung (Dynamic Stability System) zu studieren, im Moment ist aber das Budget für eine solche Modifikation nicht vorhanden, auch wenn das potential gross wäre.

Eight Cube wird nächste Woche wieder ins kalte Nass gesetzt und das Training beginnt gleich danach. 

Die erste Regatta wird die Lorient Bretagne Sud anfang April sein 150 Meilen Zweihand zusammen mit Axel Trehin welcher das letzte Mini auf 716 gesegelt hat.


Mini / Vendee / 888 / Route du Rhum

Schon vor einem Monat war ich in Les Sables d’Olonne um auf Alan Ruoras IMOCA bei der elektronik Installation  und Konfiguration zu helfen. Alans Projekt une Vendee pour la Suisse musste mit minimalem Budget auskommen undwp_20161027_15_57_08_pro trotzdem hat es gereicht er ist auf die Vendee Globe gestartet und mittlerweile am Kap der guten Hoffung vorbei. Für mich war es der erste Vendeestart den ich miterlebte, die eindrücklichste Atmosphäre die ich je erlebt habe. Während den gut 3 Wochen in denen die Imocas in Les Sables liegen ist Segeln ein regelrechter Volkssport und die Skipper der Boote die Superstars! eindrücklich das der Segelsport so viele Leute begeistern kann bei diesem Event. Es ist mein Traum da einmal teilzunehmen.

Seit Juli arbeite ich immer wieder an einem neuen Pogo 3 welcher Hendrik Witzmann gekauft hat um am nächsten Minitransat dabei zu sein. Ich half mit das Boot auszurüsten und regattafertig zu machen, damit Hendrik so schnell wie möglich ein gut eingerichtetes Boot hatte um Trainieren zu können. Ich konnte auch einige Methoden zur Navigationsvorbereitung und Organisation weitergeben, auch auf dem Wasser übernahm ich die Rolle des Beraters damit Hendrik die Abläufe der Einhand Manöver automatisieren konnte. Eine spannende Aufgabe mal die Aussensicht zu haben auf einem Mini und versuchen zu erklären warum ich die Dinge in einer gewissen Weise mache.

Die Sponsoren Suche läuft für die Regatta Ende 2018. Eine nicht einfache Aufgabe bei welcher ich glücklicherweise Professionelle Unterstützung habe. Die Route du Rhum ist der nächste grosse Schritt!  Vorträge halten, Kontakte knüpfen und Dossiers verschicken ist die Devise.





Nach dem dass Eight Cube nicht viel zu tun hatte diese Saison geht die Vorbereitung wieder los um 2017 am Start des Minitransats zu sein. Diesmal etwas besser vorbereitet und mit etwas mehr Meilen auf dem Konto!

Ich kann es mir jedoch nicht verkneifen einige dinge weiter zu Optimieren.
